Celebrating Canadian Credit Unions on International Credit Union Day

In celebration of International Credit Union Day, we wanted to take a look back on 2021 and celebrate all of the amazing things that Canadian credit unions have done in their communities this year.

International Credit Union Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948, bringing people together from credit unions around the world to celebrate their cooperative history, achievements and members. To commemorate this special day, we wanted to reflect on some of the things that Canadian credit unions have done in their communities in 2021. We can’t mention all of the amazing credit union stories in this blog but keep on reading to discover stories from a few of Canada’s credit unions.

Accent Credit Union

In celebration of Accent Credit Union’s 10 year anniversary, they introduced the “Staff Gives Back” initiative where employees will have funds available to donate to various organizations and projects in their communities. A few organizations that have received donations are Lanigan Food Bank, Robert Melrose Elementary School and Quill Lake Fire & Rescue. Learn more.

Access Credit Union

Access Credit Union and their employees raised over $102, 000 for local non-profits in 2021 with their “Jeans for Charity” program. The program allows employees to wear jeans on Friday’s while raising money for local non-profits. Every $3 donated by an employee was matched by Access Credit Union and donated to organizations chosen by employees including Habitat for Humanity Manitoba, Never Alone Foundation and Winnipeg Harvest to name a few. Affinity Credit Union

Affinity Credit Union has partnered with multiple community initiatives including Saskatoon CarShare Co-operative, Hope’s Home and Saskatchewan Environmental Society to help build a better world for everyone, every day. Learn more.

Atlantic Credit Unions

For the second year in a row, Atlantic Credit Unions are taking part in the credit union led initiative, #Loyal2LocalChallenge, in support of local businesses to stimulate local economies. Learn more.

BCorp Awards

Kindred Credit Union, Assiniboine Credit Union, PenFinancial Credit Union and NBTA Credit Union were recognized as the B Corp Best for the World™ in 2021 for performance excellence beyond just profit. All of these credit unions had verified scores in the five impact areas evaluated on the B Impact Assessment —community, customers, environment, governance, and workers—are amongst the global top 5% in their corresponding size group. Learn more.

connectFirst Credit Union

Canada’s Best Managed Companies is Canada’s leading business awards program, recognizing excellence in private Canadian-owned companies. Encompass Credit Union

Like many credit unions, Encompass Credit Union has seen tremendous value in investing in their community. Their Community Social Responsibility Investment Program contributes $10,000 per grant to capital projects that’ll benefit the greater community. Learn more.

National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

Credit unions and industry partners including Meridian Credit Union, Tandia Financial, Synergy Credit Union, Steinbach Credit Union and Credit Union Central of Manitoba are observing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by taking time to educate and learn about Indigenous history and culture.

Steinbach Credit Union

Every Wednesday this past summer, Steinbach Credit Union hosted a “Taste of Summer Charity BBQ” in support of local charities including Special Olympics Manitoba, Safe Families Steinbach and Steinbach Community Outreach to name a few. Learn more.


VanCity launched a donation program called the Vancity Humanitarian Fund to support communities affected by the wildfires in BC. Additionally, Vancity, the Government of Canada and the Government of British Columbia matched donations until August 3rd. This means that every dollar donated by a Vancity member will become $4 donated to those impacted by the wildfires. Learn more.

Congratulations to Your Neighbourhood Credit Union, Sunshine Coast Credit Union, Conexus Credit Union and Servus Credit Union for winning awards at the Canadian Credit Union Association 2021 National Credit Union Awards for outstanding leadership, innovation, community involvement and ingenuity across the Canadian credit union system.
